Scrum Product Ownership - Balancing Value From the Inside Out

Published on LuLu.com on March 24, 2009

In the spirit of Henrik Kniberg's Scrum & XP from the Trenches book, I've written a guide for the Scrum Product Owner. In it I try to fill many of the practice gaps that exist for this truly  crucial role. You can pick-up a copy here...

And another Product Owner Book & Guidance...

There seems to be a trend building focused towards the Product Owner. (a good thing :-)  Almost at the same time Anna Forss has written Confessions of a Serial Product Owner. You should grab a copy of it. In my view it's a quite gentle introduction to the role of Product Owner. It's relatively short and quite a fast read. But the contents are driven by real, in the trenches, experience that comes through very nicely.

It seems that Anna has been blogging about "Agile stuff" for awhile and you can catch up on her thoughts here.

I'm starting to think that 2009 might be the Year of the Product Owner. How interesting will that be?

Articles

This will be a clearinghouse for articles, conference presentations, book projects and supporting materials for our primary areas of interest.

Fourth Quarter 2005 IS-SIG Review, an article entitled "Airline Communication?" that is focused on effective project communications - using an anti-pattern model. Email us if you want a copy.

We've been relatively active publishing in Software Test & Performance magazine.

    • March 2005 - Cover / lead article (Metrics) entire issue can be downloaded at - http://www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2005-03.pdf
    • November 2005 - Future Test (Moving Beyond Commodity Testing) entire issue can be downloaded at - http://www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2005-11.pdf
    • February 2006 - Cover / lead article (Defect Workflows) entire issue can be downloaded at - http://www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2006-02.pdf
    • I was asked to provide commentary for the May 23 and May 30 issues of the SD Time - Testing & QA newsletter. One is related to test automation and the other making schedule commitments.
    • June 2006 - Cover / lead article (Scrum in Testing) for their Agile themed issues. It's directly related to the presentation surrounding this topic. The entire issue can be downloaded at - http://www.stpmag.com/issues/
    • June 2007 - Cover / lead article (Scaling Testing in Scrum) for their Agile themed issue. This is an extension from the last article I wrote focused on Scrum in general. Here I explore how traditional Agile testing methods need to be extended when scaling within larger, legacy & enterprise level applications. The entire issue can be downloaded at - http://www.stpmag.com/issues/

    • We just completed 3 article series on management related topics of Test Automation for Software Test & Performance magazine. Look for the following -
      • November 2006 - article entitled (How to Build Tests and Apps in Tandem). In it I explore the details of the Test Automation development life-cycle and discuss how it needs to be integrated and synchronized with your product SDLC. ---www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2006-11.pdf
      • December 2006 - article entitled (Sizing Up Automation Candidates). Here I explored test case selection criteria options for teams who are struggling figuring out where to start their automation efforts within a large base of manual test cases. --- www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2006-12.pdf
      • January 2007 - article entirled (Making the Case: Develop Your Defense for Test Automation). Finally, I wrap up the series by exploring the areas to focus on when you are developing a Business Case for Test Automation. --- www.stpmag.com/issues/stp-2007-01.pdf

If you're considering starting (re-starting) an automation effort, I strongly suggest readint the material within the series. It really focuses on getting things off on the right foot.  I'm also developing this material into a presentation entitled: Test Automation: Keys for Smart Starts.

April 2006 article in Better Software magazine on (Release Criteria). Email us if you want a copy.

My Metrics artcle from ST&P March 2005 was also published in the The Journal of the Quality Assurance Institute - July 2006, Volume 20, Number 3.

In September 2007 I was interviewed by Empirix QAZone while at the ST&P East conference. The questions focused on traditional test planning and mostly on "testing in Agile". You can find the transcript here - http://qazone.empirix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=450&tstart=0

I've also got a variant of the above ST&P automation articles running on CM Crossroads - QA Crossroads portal here - www.qacrossroads.com
