Mission

It is our view that the science and craft of software development are very difficult endeavors, with most of the focus directed towards advancing technologies.

While technological change is clearly a challenge, we believe a far greater challenge faces software organizations at the junction of people and technology - or on the "people side" of that equation.

To that end, we aspire to be your premier guide and partner in harnessing the power of your teams in creating superb software products.

We believe there is no better approach or means to that end than by leveraging the Agile Methods. We have solid experience using SCRUM + XP Practces + LEAN Thinking as the primary methodology cocktail for driving your results.

Experience

Our experience resides in the craft of software development. More specifically, in the art and craft of leading teams along the path to building outstanding software. We have hard earned experience in the pitfalls along that path and can assist you with -

  • Software Construction & Testing

  • Software Team Leadership

  • Software Project Management

We've worked in multiple domains, using a wide variety of incremental methodologies and technologies. We have deep and practical experience using RUP and Agile Methodologies (XP and Scrum) and like to think there are very few software scenarios we haven't experienced.

We work with each client to fully assess and understand their needs. Then propose a solution that will help supplement your experience and achieve your goals. That solution can take the form of customized coaching, consulting and training. Read more about our abilities and services.

Our Company Profile

RGCG was formed in the Fall of 2001 to provide consulting and training services to aid your software teams in outstanding project execution.

Robert (Bob) Galen is Principal Consultant of RGCG.  Bob, in conjunction with our other consulting associates, has deep experience across a spectrum of business contexts and methodologies that you can leverage in a wide variety of ways.

As you can see from our affiliations, we subscribe to many of the tenants of the Agile Methods and bring seasoned and practical agility experience to each engagement.

You might ask - what makes us different from other consulting firms?  We immediately think of three key differentiators:

  • First, it's our passion for the profession and seeing our customers and their teams succeed.  Sincerely, there is no greater reward for us than this.
  • Second, it's the breadth of our experience. You'll be hard pressed to find a consulting partner with our depth across software development, testing and project management.
  • Finally, it's our pragmatism.  If there is something we've learned from our experiences, it's that simple and practical solutions are usually the right solutions.

When you find yourself frustrated with your overall performance and your software teams struggling to achieve their best, look to us. We care, we're effective and we can help!

March 24, 2009: Just Published via LuLu.com Book / e-Guide available --

Scrum Product Ownership - Balancing Value from the Inside Out

I've noticed a distinct 'gap' in the guidance the Agile community provides towards Scrum Product Owners, XP Customers, and anyone representing the "Business-side" of agile teams.

Focusing on Scrum as the model, I've written a guide intended to share insights into the broad set of requisite skills and suggest approaches & techniques for this critical member of all agile teams. In order to be successful within agility, you must engage your customer.

I had been making early revisions of this guide available to the agile community. Now that the book is published, if you want an e-copy, you can purchase a PDF on LuLu.com for a very reasonable charge.

If you're looking to become a better Product Owner, or you know a PO who needs some help, please pick up a copy as we know you'll find it useful...Enjoy!

Note: within 4-6+ weeks, it will be available on Amazon.com and other onling booksellers.

As of October 2008, I'm Back !!!

After working exclusively with ChannelAdvisor as an Agile Architect and Director, Product Development for the past 18 months

I've decided to move back into my practice.

ChannelAdvisor is well on the path to being a very solid Scrum + XP shop so I felt it was time to move onto other challenges. The teams there were excellent--as was the experience. I find my skills sharpened again by the real-world projects and challenges. You'll see these "lessons" coming out in my blogs, writing, and presentations in late 2008 and 2009.

Eddie Correia, Editor of ST&P magazine and Program Chair for the ST&P Conferences was kind in writing about my 2009 Spring agile talks in his Test & QA Report newsletter - here.

Related news on this front, Redwood Collaborative Media and the STP Collaborative have invited me to be a member of their Strategic Advisory Board. I'm honored to get the chance to help focus and drive their efforts towards improving the state of software testing collaboration & education.

I'll also be part of the Great Agile Debate with Rex Black - a webinar on August 6, 2009. Surprise - I'm taking the agile perspective and will be convincing Rex that he's been wrong all of these years.

I know, I know, it's overdue! But, finally I'm blogging a bit - catch Bob Galen's - Agile Software Teams - blog

Our speaking calendar for 2009 is quickly filling out. Take a look at our upcoming events and synch up if you get the chance.

We're working on a new book focused on Software Project Estimation & Planning. Join us as a reviewer or just stay tuned. It should be available sometime in late 2009.
